The word bae can occasionally be derogatory or unpleasant when used to refer to someone deemed attractive or when used to address a stranger or casual acquaintance, akin to similar usage of babe and baby. Some people believe that the term originated as an acronym for 'before anyone else', but this seems to be an example of a backronym and is not common. This term became popular around 20 through social media and hip-hop and R&B lyrics.
